Poker, also known as poque, is a family of card games which are played by groups of people around a circular table. Each player is dealt a hand of cards from a shuffled deck. A 52-card deck is used in most games. Four different suits are represented in the deck. Cards may be dealt face down or face up. The dealer shuffles the deck. Cards are dealt in prearranged rounds of face down and face up. Some of the cards are cut at the same time, while others are passed out in sets. The first player to receive a card is the nominal dealer.
After the antes are paid, the dealer then cuts the deck and passes the cards out to the players one by one. Depending on the rules, the initial dealer may cut the deck and pass out all of the cards or only the cards he has. These changes affect how the game is played. Typically, the dealer will deal out the cards clockwise.
A final round of betting is followed by the showdown. During the showdown, all the players’ hands are revealed. The player with the best hand wins the pot. Occasionally, a straight hand of five cards is used as the final hand.
